What is pollution?

Pollution is any change to water that has a harmful effect on people or any living things. Humans cause most of the pollution. Everything humans make eventually turns into trash and the trash ends up in humongous landfills. The biggest landfill is in Maine. The waste in the landfills overtime leeches into oceans and effects many sources of wildlife. The pollutants coming from the landfills release many harmful chemicals such as chlorine, fluorine, bromine, and other pesticides. These things harm birds and it pollutes the water. Many giant factories burn leftover sludge from sewers and this causes chemicals and pollutants to get in the air, which eventually end up in the ocean. We should all work together to stop this nonsense!

Why should we keep the ocean clean?

We should keep the ocean clean simply because, we can not live without clean drinking water. Everything on this planet that is living requires water. If all the bodies of water were completely polluted then the plants would die, so then the animals would die because they wouldn't have any plants to eat, then we would die because we would not have any plants or animals to eat. It would be a domino effect yet again. We need to keep the ocean clean so we can keep living. Amen sistah!!

Cruise ship pollution...

Cruise ships are also a main cause of pollution. They have many people on them and therefore, those people create lots of waste and sewage, all of which is dumped into the ocean. This kills and harms all sorts of wildlife. Human sewage carries bacteria, pathogens, diseases, viruses, and eggs of parasites. The number of people on a cruise ship has grown by 1000% in the last few years. Each passenger generates up to 10 gallons of sewage and 85 gallons of gray water daily. The total for each day, for all the people on one ship, is 255,000 gallons of gray water and 30,000 gallons of sewage each day, and all of this going into the ocean. Cruise ships are permitted to dump raw sewage three miles away from the shore(which can easily come back to the land).

The oil tanks can often break or leak oil into the ocean which is extremely deadly to both the land and water wildlife.

Effects on animal and plant life...

Ocean pollution contaminates the water and anything in it, such as plants and animals. The pollutants kill plants which the animals need for survival. Pollution can directly effect animals as well. If an animal gets effected by pollution then that animal could die or get ill. If fish get contaminated and we eat the fish then we could get seriously sick too. It's much like a chain reaction, if one gets sick then so does the other. Pollution causes a severe decline in the animal and plant population.

How we can help ...

Ocean pollution is a serious problem and we should help to fix it. Here are some ways you can help:
- Conserve water
- Recycle
- Pick up trash, don't litter
- Choose non-toxic products for home use
- Don't touch living coral
- Do not dump petroleum products
- Dispose of household and yard chemicals properly
- Minimize use of fertilizers and pesticides on your yard

Companies should re-think the way they do things to help reduce the pollutants they give out. Some paper mills are stopping their use of chlorine so it does not leak into the ocean. If other companies were to make better choices like some of the paper mill companies, then Earth would be a much cleaner place.
